| Audio CD Description Jonny Lang cut his debut album in Memphis when he was just 15, and, upon its release in 1996, the guitar prodigy from Minneapolis instantly became one of the leading lights of modern blues. He's a fast and flashy player whose approach rests equally on technical assurance and musical intelligence. Sizing up a dozen songs, he gets a pleasing, razor-sharp sound out of his ax while building excitement in his lead lines--thankfully, he steers clear of cliché and bombast. As a fledging singer, he acts out the lyrics of Ike Turner's age-old shuffle "Matchbox" and his own romantic ballad "Missing Your Love" with surprising poise and believability. Kudos to producer David Z for surrounding Lang with alert, first-rate sidemen and for helping select good material from Turner, Sonny Boy Williamson, Tinsley Ellis, and others. |

good music, but not real authentic When you first hear this album, you're almost blown away by the musical quality and the talent of the musicians involved. Johnny is obviously an excellent guitarist. It's rather dissapointing, however, upong examination of each of the song credits. Johnny sings on all the tracks, and plays on all of them, but the material on the record just isn't his. He's more like the poster boy for the record companies and all of the other extremely talented musicians on the album. When you're singing the blues, one of the most important things is that it comes from your soul, and the words your sing are your own. That's where the raw emotion comes from. You can't simulate that kind of thing no matter how you market it.
Good ol' raw blues Jonny Lang did a wonderful job on this disc. If you want to buy the best of Jonny, get his early discs as he has wandered into pop/eclectic music now which is a shame and a sin. I suspect large money offers swayed him from his true roots.
Raw Emotion I bought this several years ago as a cassette. Love at first hear. I was looking for young blues singers and I hit a jackpot with Jonny Lang. His voice is wrought with raw emotion...unusual with a young singer. I thought he was much older than his years. Not long after buying this cassette, I had to buy his next one. I just recently replaced all my Jonny Lang cassettes with CDs, and can't emphasize enough that this CD is a MUST for blues fans. |
