"Welcome to the big time."
That's one of the awards Train is up for at the VH1 Music Awards in December; and I completely agree. I saw Train nearly 3 years ago in a tiny little hole-in-the-wall bar in Columbus, OH...and that was only because a friend MADE me go. There were maybe 10 people there. Yet from that moment on, I was hooked. Their stage energy, ability to "draw the crowd in," and genuine musical talent captivated me. As a music major myself, I'm really picky about who I listen to. They passed the test with flying colors. Pat has one of those voices that will be remembered for generations.
The past few reviews have discussed the "switch-over" to pop that this album had. But what is pop nowadays? Would you consider Britney Spears, Train, and Weezer all in the same category just because their music is sold under the "pop-rock" section? Music, to me, doesn't really fall under a category. This CD is TRAIN...they went into the studio, recorded until their voices left them and until their fingers were bleeding. They put their heart and soul into this album, and the finished product is absolutely amazing. Each song is different, yet they all tie together like a fascinating novel with interlocking chapters. You have to listen to all of them to get the true meaning of the ending.
I hope this CD sells another million
I have to admit that my review will be a little prejudiced since
I worked with Pat about 8 years ago and saw him perform in his pre-Train days. He could sing anything and make it sound good. The thing that I liked and still do is that anyone can buy this CD and not worry about the lyrics and be afraid that the kids will hear something bad. This is just not their style. If you have seen them, you know that the music is both sincere and riveting and you just want these guys to do well with their music.
When I first heard Drops of Jupiter in March, I knew the song would be huge but would be one of those that would take awhile to get up the charts but would stay there for awhile. My other favorite songs on the album are She's On Fire, Respect and Something More, if I had to pick just a few favorites. Having seen Pats versatility with vocals in concert, I know that they still have some great CDs yet to come. Keep rockin'. Joe
An Album Full Of Hits!
This album is destined to become an all-time favorite.Every song on the album has potential to be a hit single. The title track, "Drops Of Jupiter", is a wonderful soulfully sentimental pop hit. It's a classic song and is very enjoyable.
Train is easily one of the best new groups on the current scene. Their music has depth and excells in it's spectacular arrangements and use of instruments such as; the mandolin, saxophone, trumpet and acoustic guitar. Pat Monahan's voice is not necessarily broad though he has a yearning soulful quality which draws you in. He sings on key and with clear diction. His voice is very pleasing to the ears.
"Something More" is another standout track. It sounds like something from John Lennon's "Double Fantasy" album. The melody and lyrics are quite memorable. Equally intriguing is the closing song "Mississippi", it has a laidback mood with a breezy saxophone throughout. This song soothes and inspires you. It's a very strong closing tune which leaves you wanting more.
