Audio CD Description

This sentimentally over-the-top spoken-word recording was originally issued in 1973, during the height of Watergate and the final, unsettling days of the Vietnam War. In the wake of September 11, 2001, the John Wayne Estate reissued it on CD. And why not? Marion Morrison, a.k.a. John Wayne and the Duke, remains an enduring symbol of America--a country with an endlessly conflicted legacy of largely improvised symbolism, national myths, revised-on-a-dime history, and the freedom to make a buck on effusive patriotic rhetoric. Kitsch collectors may welcome the chance to own a true genre staple in digital sound, while others may yet find genuine solace in its orchestra-and-choir-backed oratory. With a poetic sensibility that seldom strays from the "Carolina pines/Appalachian mines" level of its opening verses, Wayne's processed voice (which betrays the health problems that would be his demise) expounds on topics that range from his homeland's undeniable natural beauty to his son's high school football career and the wisdom of a fictionalized aging Mexican caballero. The would-be idealism in "The Hyphen" aims to erase ethnic and racial boundaries, yet modern hyphenated Americans may find continued prejudice and the vagaries of history have rendered its rhetoric distinctly double-edged. Still, Wayne's love of country emanates from every track. Patriotism may be the last refuge of scoundrels, but it's been graciously hospitable to Hollywood icons, from the Duke to Dutch Reagan.

Comments From Our Customers

It is what i have been looking for

I love this cd. I had the 8 track as a child. I have been looking for this for years. It says so much about America and why we work to keep our country free.

Beautiful!

At a Pro Bull Riders rodeo event I attended in Chicago (Rosemont Horizon) in early 2000, the first track ("Why I Love Her") was played as perfectly-coreographed images of the described scenes displayed on the huge stadium screen. Having been to 30 of the states, and having seen most of the places described, I was quite moved. Also having a July 4th birthday, I'm intensely patriotic. I found myself in tears within half a minute. Then I looked around me and saw quite a few others in the audience reacting similarly. The poetry on this CD is rhythmic, rich and well-written. The orchestration is timed perfectly to the words. Mr. Wayne's recitation is so accurate, authoritative, comforting and sensitively read. His deep, rough voice was -- and still is -- a national treasure. I then thought about my 92-year-old grandmother, then in a nursing home (she was to pass on about four months later). She was a HUGE John Wayne fan, and I am, too. I recommend this CD to literally everybody. Anyone who finds it "corny" or "sentimental" needs to do some soul-searching, in my opinion.

America's Roots

This CD brings me back to what America is supposed to be, "Good!" What I mean by "Good" is, when Americans went to church every Sunday morning and raised their kids on the principals of God. A time when you could go to the movies and not have to worry about ratings, R, PG, PG13, etc. When comedians didn't have to swear or be krass to be funny, and when being a Democrat meant "For The People," not "Liberal Bias." John Wayne "America, Why I Love Her" is a breath of fresh air in troubled times!
