I don't know...
I've always found the Kinks highly overrated myself. I mean, I like some of their music, but they don't hold a candle to their British Invasion peers. Ray Davies' lyrics can be witty and semi-insightful, but not they certainly do not compare to something John Lennon or Pete Townshend was capable of writing. That is to say nothing of the great songwriters who exsisted in America, such as Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison or Jimi Hendrix. And if one more person tells me that You Really Got Me Now is the first metal song, I will tell them to go listen to Foxey Lady or Sunshine of Your Love. That, and Dave Davies only wishes he could keep up with such second-rate guitarists as Bruce Springsteen or Robbie Krieger (of the Doors, kids).
Excellent Choice!
The Kinks were an incredible band, and this particular CD is the best overview of their career; unlike the other best-of-sets that have come out over the years, this one uses the original versions of the songs, not live ones made after the Kinks went to RCA in the early 70s. This also is 2 1/2 hours of music that follows the Kinks from 64 to the late 80s, allowing you to get a fairly complete take on their career; this one deserves to go in your collection, and here is hoping a box-set gets made and released in the US someday!
Masterful Collection!
I recently saw Ray here in Chicago for the Other People's Lives tour and decided that I needed to update some of my old scratchy records. This collection pulls it all together very nicely. Some nice notes by a David Wells (not the pitcher) and some very cool pix. The sound is superb! Flawless! My only complaint is the actual CD case. It's very flimsy and it needed to be replaced upon first opening. Those Brits....
