Audio CD Description

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more.

Comments From Our Customers

Excellent CD

Its not-quite-jazz, not-quite-blues but I loved it. Nora Jones is a rare and gifted talent that only comes along once in while. Her voice is so sultry and sophisticated that I thought I was listening to a much older artist. Every song on her album invites you into the world of her soulful music for a listening experience that made me play the songs over and over. Excellent CD. You'll get lost in the music.

Thanks For The Intro To Mehdi

I've always enjoyed Norah Jones and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered a group by the name of Mehdi (pronounced meddie). After an online search I found their site (SoothingMusic - Com) and listened to the samples...

NORAH JONES IS A GREAT ARTIST

I thought this album was great. It was a very stressful time in my life and I went into the vitamin store and they were playing Norah Jones and she just calmed everything down and I didn't want to leave the store. If you need some peaceful moments with a high tech stressed society at times Norah is a good voice to hear. I always received the same calm blissful feeling from her dad Ravi Shanker's playing since a tiny kid. I love their music and spiritual energy. I too have sung my whole life and I feel a kindred spirit with Norah's music. I bought a copy soon as I could. I used to teach voice and coach voice students but Norah has this beautiful natural voice that is timeless.
