YES!!!!!
Why are so many people hung up on the style of this cd? This is Enigma's 5th album and i think one of their best. No artist is making the same music after 5 albums. So stop criticizing Michael Cretu for not putting any gregorian chants on this album and changing his style a bit. One of the things that make this cd so great is that it flows so well. From begining to end. Hopefully, somehow Enigma will have a much needed hit in America. They more than deserve it. "Page of Cups", "Boum Boum","Following The Sun" are the highlights here.-Classic Enigma- aLSO WORTH NOTING IS "tHE lOOK of Today", which is a very different song for Enigma.Very club oriented and obviously influenced by the island of Ibiza, which is where he resides. Michael Cretu is one of the most talented people out there. He has been putting out some of the biggest hits all over the world. First with his own songs(1985's "When Love is The missing Word"), then with his wife Sandra (Maria Magdalena) and now with Enigma. Here's to hoping that he never stops. Only one complaint from me--make Sandra the featured vocalist of Enigma again. To me and i'm sure many others she will always be the voice of ENIGMA.
What happened to Enigma?
Ok, I will not do the step-by-step through all the song, but rather take a little dive into the Enigma concept. I am a sworn Enigma fan, and has been so since Enigma's first release in 1990. MCMXC a.D and Cross of Changes were unquestionably excellent albums. After that it has unfortunately been going downhill with Michael Cretu's creative skills. He once had a philosophy of breaking all the rules of creating music in order to create something new. I believe he stuck to this philosophy on the first two albums. After that I feel it started going downhill with his Enigma project. Ok, I admit there's a couple of good productions on Le Roi Est Mort and Screen Behind the Mirror. However, these albums were in my opinion not in the true and original spirit of Enigma (the intro on SBM is a blueprint of a Vangelis' Albedo). It's ok to change and go through a metamorphosis, but hey let's face it - it has been going the wrong way, and that is in particular the case for this album. I have all respect for Cretu as a composer and producer, but on Voyageur it seems like he's tired of the whole Enigma project. I may be completely wrong, but it seems to me like he's to the point where he just want to finish up the number of Enigma albums he got signed up for by the label and then move on with something else...
Voyageur is definitely the weakest Enigma album thus far. It sounds like something I could put together in my home studio in the matter of a few weeks (yes I do actually have some productions myself that sounds a lot better than any of the tracks on this album). That is actually the thing that is the most disappointing. Enigma used to be excactly what the name says, something magic, enigmatic, something untouchable, something I would never be able to make myself. Well, sad to say, it is no longer so. If you are a die hard enigma fan, you may want to get this album just to complete your collection. If not, you should stay clear. I've carefully listened to Voyageur about ten times now, and the album has yet not grown on me. MCMXC still sounds better every time I listen to it even today 13 years after its release. I really hope that all of the sudden Voyageur will do the same thing, but if it doesn't happen within the next 10 times I play the album, I am afraid to conclude that Cretu totally failed on this one. Now, if the album should grow on me, I will resubmit a new review and explain why it did... To you folks out there giving Voyageur 5 stars, I am happy for you. To me it was the greatest disappointment the week...
Thanks For The Introduction To Mehdi
I've always enjoyed Enigma and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this page I discovered an artist by the name of Mehdi (pronounced meddie). After some investigation I found his site (SoothingMusic.Com) and listened to the samples...I also downloaded some of the free MP3 downloads that are available on Amazon.com.
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to his CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Eingma fan I find Mehdi to be a tad more interesting. I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.
