| Audio CD Description While her debut's been promoted through a glitzy high-fashion photo package and items in trendy magazines, South Carolina native Roberts, who has the looks for such hype, also delivers the goods. Her smoky, beguiling voice echoes Bonnie Raitt and a young Tanya Tucker. She and producer/guitarist Brent Rowan shun the blaring arena rock or folk-flavored pretense that plagues many debuts. This one emphasizes solid, quality commercial fare in an Americana-based setting heavy on acoustic guitars and rhythm. Roberts sets the tone with Jamie O'Hara's fetchingly acerbic "You Ain't Down Home." The winsome "Unlove Me" and let-it-rip "Just 'Cause We Can" each pack a wallop; so does the witty morning-after chronicle "Wake Up Older" and the dark, evocative "No Way Out." No overdone power ballads here. Understatement drives her elegant, heartbreaking interpretation of Julie Miller's "I Can't Get Over You." In the end, Roberts remembers an axiom many on Music Row long ago forgot: a powerful voice, simple, honest storytelling, and no-frills music are still what country's about. --Rich Kienzle |

Welcome to Country Music Julie Roberts With this debut album, Julie Roberts has positioned herself as a force to be reckoned with as she'll giggle to the bank. At first I thought she was a little Barbie doll fluffball they were promoting just like all the other Nashville glossy wanna-be's. But after hearing this CD - uh.....WRONG! This girl sings like a seasoned 40 year old who has lived life and got her heartbroke. Her phrasing and twang don't even sound like Nashville or like she's trying to copy anybody or be formulatic in her production. Not using the old stand-bys Dan Huff, Tony Brown, etc. etc. her production is fresh without being overdone and her singing is simple and not overstated. Impressive debut. My favorite tune is "unlove me" with back-up vocals by Vince Gill. Her Thank You's take up 2 full pages..I think she remembered EVERYONE I tell ya. Love that quote in to her Mom, "We made it cuze we weren't skeered!"
Sweet Southern Comfort Julie Roberts has the voice of a country angel! The first time I heard "Break Down Here" I knew I had to have this cd. It has been in my cd player ever since! Every song has its own little flare and each as wonderful as the next. I can't wait for her next single "Wake Up Older." My personal favorite "Rain on a Tin Roof" but like I said they are all wonderful and close seconds haha. Do yourself a favor and grab this CD, you wont regret it
Really good I love this album. I like how it has different feel to the songs. Some have a hint of blues and some have a hint classic country other a pop contryn feel. I would go out and buy this cd new. I have put this in my mp3 player. It is one I will always listen too and never get bored of. |
