Very poetic

This is a really good album from a fairly new and interesting artist. The songs are very poetic. I have always been one of those people that really listened to the lyrics in a song. I find this a very unique type of album. Not only are the lyrics original, but so is the music. I like the softness of the songs here. I don't like albums where people yell at the top of their lungs, yet have nothing to say. I see Sufjan Stevens as a thinking person, who is in touch with the world around him. My three favorite songs are the silly "Night Zombies", the title track "Come On! Feel the Illinoise" and the most serious one "Casimir Pulaski Day". This is a really good and varied album.

Wonder Which State Is Next - Despair?

Anyone who has the sheer courage to attempt an honest song about John Wayne Gacy, Jr. certainly deserves a second look, unfortunately, when you look again, it's still a train wreck. One cannot deny the touching sincerity exhibited by Sufjan Stevens in his ambitious work, which features highly original and entertaining titles if nothing else. However, the delivery, the voice, the style, and the overall sensibility are cloying, morbid, and dour, a quagmire oozing precious self-pity. Listen to it for a while, then pound nails through your hand for a while. See if you can tell the difference.

A Bright Collage of Musical Honesty

In the 70's we had Cat Stevens and in this abstract and complex age we have Sufjan.Sufjan Stevens is one of the most interesting musical artists I have run into in a long time. What a myriad of instrumentation. He is not afraid to experiment with a variety of melodies either. The lyrics can be MOST profound as in "Oh god of progress, have you degraded or forgot us? Where have your walls gone? I think about it now." He has the courage to sing about John Gacy when commercial artists would not have the courage to even touch a subject like that. What you get with Sufjan is a collage of pure honesty. What does real honesty look like? A little like a Pollack painting, but with beautifully blended colors. Incredibly inventive use of the banjo...WOW!!!
