Gods of Rock
I love the style of Depeche Mode, never the ordinary always unique. That's why they've been around for so long. My favorite songs are Suffer Well, I Want It All, and Precious. When I heard this album it reminded me of a new band called Chambre Noir, they use soundtracks and electronics as the backdrop of their music also. I recently saw Depeche Mode in concert and the show was awesome.
I almost missed it
At first listen I was ready to put it in the "circular file". Exciter didn't excite (me) at all, but art is in the 'ear' of the beholder. Strangely I found myself going back to hear it out, and it finally sank in. Yes it is a different product without Alan Wilder(sorry, but Recoil does nothing for me, and I truly hate to say that Wilder's talents are squandered in that project), but it is still Depeche Mode. Everybody tries to compare all of their work with Violator, which set the bar so high that it will probably never be equalled by anybody, let alone themselves, but that was then, and this is now. Not everybody can appreciate the efforts required to stay true to your sound, while breaking 'new ground' in the context of your previous works, which span 2 decades plus. I ended up liking this album in spite of my first listen.
Excellent piece of music... A new favorite!
First off, let me tell you that the first time I listened to this album I couldn't even get to the end of it; I thought it was terrible. And I was dead WRONG.
