| Audio CD Description Channeling the evocative storytelling of Laura Nyro and the soulful sexiness of Dusty Springfield, singer/songwriter Jenny Lewis skips all contemporary studio gimmickry to proffer a near-perfect solo debut. The front-woman for indie darlings Rilo Kiley breaks away from the songwriting democracy she shares with that band's co-leader Blake Sennett (also of the Elected), drawing inspiration from the crackling vinyl albums of her youth. And from the opening notes of "Run Devil Run," an acapella gospel hymn sung with the Watson Twins, through the note-for-note cover of the Traveling Wilbury's "Handle With Care" (with Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard), Lewis verifies this is her record. Her goose-bump voice can be as mournful as it is optimistic, but remains perpetually mesmerizing on |

a little let down.. Ok, so I heard this album was coming out..I pre ordered it..I waited..I received it..and I scratched my head....First off, I have been a fan of Rilo Kiley for a long time and was so impressed with their last album that I may have jumped the gun on this release. Yes this album is really, all in all, pretty decent. NOT GREAT, Or even a 5 star as Im sure Rolling Stone has given it..but good. The biggest let down of all on this album is basically Jenny Lewis. I had heard this was going to be a more roots gospel country sounding record...and I was stoked, given that her voice is so strong and capable of so much..Unfortunately
Good CD Would've liked to hear more upbeat tracks, and less oh-woe-is-me ones (although that's the norm in this Post-Sarah MacLachlan genre). Overall a good, but not great, CD with a few memorable songs and a lot of forgetable ones.
good, but not fantastic jenny Lewis is nto at the top of her game on this album. her other work with rilo kiley feels more substantial. this is not to say that jenny is not fantastically amazing. i love her, utterly and completely, saw her live on tour with the watson twins and did it all with a smile with the guy i was seconds away from dumping. she is very charismatic, but Rabbit Fur Coat makes me feel like she is playing a role and not being the all nerves out and exposed rilo kiley jenny i love and feel for. i would recommend the rilo kiley albums, esp the execution of all things, compared to this side project of hers. she is amazing, great however, just this album is stagnant and she can do better. |
