Audio CD Description

This young Californian has apparently suffered from a case of mistaken artistic identity in his attempts to forge his own. The blazing guitar chops on this album's "Cold Black Devil/14 Miles" show why some consider him among the most promising of a new generation of bluesslingers, yet much of the material makes him sound more like a young Bob Dylan than the next Stevie Ray Vaughan. Though Dylan comparisons rarely do a developing artist any favors, it's hard to avoid them with the majestic, 10-minute build of "Supersede." Elsewhere, the horn arrangements of "So Hard to Find My Way" and "Close to You" evoke Van Morrison's California days, while the riffing of "Farewell, So Long, Goodbye" rocks like the Rolling Stones. Much of the rest is acoustic balladry that finds Greene achieving a musical intimacy that resists easy comparisons. A multi-instrumentalist featured on organ and piano as well as a variety of guitars, Greene benefits from the musical support of bassist Davey Faragher (Cracker) and drummer Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello's Attractions) and empathic production by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos). As a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, he's more than the sum of his very good influences.

Comments From Our Customers

Half-disappointed, half-elated

I love Jackie Greene. I've bought all his albums and have written glowing reviews on his albums (see Sweet Somewhere Bound), and was happy and eager to hear Jackie's new release. However, when I listened to it and compared to his previous albums, I can't help but consider it an inferior piece of work.

Jackie Greene is a Phenomenally Talented Musician! This CD is Incredible!

I have been following Jackie Greene for 3.5 years. He is incredibly talented. Watching him perform is mesmerizing. This new album is different from the others but it is original and thoroughly addictive. I feel fortunate to have seen this artist perform up close and personal many many times. Those days are over. His venues are becoming larger and larger, as is fitting for a musician whose considerable talents are being recognized and embraced by an eager public.

Thoroughly impressed

Jackie Greene simply shines on this album. He took two steps forward, no steps back, and turned out a collection that is as varied and layered as his influences seem to be. His voice is noticibly stronger and more refined than on his previous efforts, and the musicianship on this album is top-of-the-line. True rock'n'roll fans rejoice: with this album Greene proves that there is at least one young artist making creative and inspired music even as the artistic standards of the mainstream music industry crumble around his feet. I only hope Greene finds a large enough audience that recognizes quality when they hear it, so we can continue to enjoy the evolution of a truly rare talent. In short (just in case it didn't go without saying), I highly recommend this album to any thinking music fan.
