| Audio CD Description A few decades ago nearly every country singer had at least one--often more--gospel albums in their catalog. Today, aside from gospel veteran Amy Grant, who balances the sacred and secular, and Randy Travis, that concept has long faded. For Alan Jackson, however, treating the musical past as present has been a way of life, as it is with these 15 timeless hymns from his youth. Recorded with just two acoustic guitars and a piano, it was originally a private Christmas present to his mother. The spare instrumentation is surprisingly robust behind his flawless readings of "I'll Fly Away," "Softly and Tenderly," "How Great Thou Art," "Are You Washed in the Blood?," and "The Old Rugged Cross," all as beguilingly unpretentious as any of his country hits. Instead of an all-star duet, wife Denise and daughters Mattie and Ali join in on "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus." In the end, what began as a private bequest becomes a moving, eloquent gift to Jackson's entire audience. |

A Joyful Noise Alan Jackson's sparsely produced Gospel collection "Precious Memories" was given to me as a gift from another a cappela church member, and I have listened to it nearly unceasingly since I received it nearly 24 hours ago. The clean, unadorned beauty of Jackson's voice evokes the unadulterated simplicity of a first century church, when Christians gathered to "..make a joyful noise unto the Lord." While it's a departure from his usual musical offerings, this album is a gift to both his Mother and to believers everywhere.
This is a great CD I bought two more of these to give for Mothers Day, after I enjoyed mine so much. Alan Jackson's version of many standard
Beautifully produced spiritual hymns Alan Jackson -- ever the country music classicist -- restores two traditions at once, offering an album of faith while at the same time paring his accompaniment to an earthier acoustically-inclined core. This collection of fifteen hymns draws its power entirely from Jackson's commitment and the songs' timeless qualities, forgoing any calculated commercial intentions. Originally recorded as a personal gift to Jackson's mother, the album's public release has brought an unexpected dividend, debuting at #1 on the country album chart, while simultaneously topping Billboard's Christian album chart and landing at #4 on Billboard's album chart. CD buyers are tapping into the heartfelt, private nature of the performances, with Jackson's voice and his harmony singers strikingly framed by gentle arrangements of acoustic guitar, piano and organ. The material rings with the familiarity of regular worship services, and will be dear to those raised in the faith; those who spent their Sundays elsewhere will find inspiration in these classic songs. One might be inclined to think of these performances as a family living-room sing, were the family not so unusually talented. Still, the spare arrangements and Jackson's devotion allow the songs to take center stage, with the singer's luminous talent providing the halo. [?2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com] |
